OCS Major technologies, suppliers and current technological bottlenecks

OCS technology development is in a competitive state and is divided into four major routes, each with trade-offs in terms of switching speed, insertion loss, reliability and scalability. The four major technologies are MEMS, LCD, piezoelectric, and SiPh waveguide, as shown in Table 3 below.

  1. MEMS OCS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Reflector Scope), which is the most mature, has been adopted by Google TPU series, and can do 320×320 or even larger.
  2. LC OCS (Liquid Crystal Switching), with high reliability, is Coherent's main technology. Currently, we have shipped a variety of 64×64 and 320×320 systems, with a wider range of customers than initially expected. The disadvantage is that the switching speed is a little slow (50-100ms).
